Great Basin National Park
Nevada

Wheeler Peak

I had been to Great Basin National Park three times before, but either the road up Wheeler Peak was snowed in, or else the peak itself was clouded over. But this time I could see from a distance that the peak was thrusting itself upward into blue sky!

I have vertigo and therefore have a hard time driving mountain roads where there are dropoffs and no guard rails. And this road has plenty of those places. But I headed up that road anyway. Mt. Wheeler rises to an elevation of 13,063 feet -- pretty high mountain. I made it to the 10,000 foot level, which is not quite as far as you can drive, but almost, and there is a good parking area there. And, as you can see, the view of the peak is spectacular!

And I love those trees. This is mighty close to timberline, and the trees are stunted and twisted, which makes them good photo subjects.

Ahh, the trees. . .
