Cheyenne, Wyoming
The Wyoming State Capitol is pretty big for such a small state (in population--less than half a million). Its elevation is over 6000', but it is still only the second highest capitol building in the US.
The capitol dome is pretty nice. It's been regilded six times; the last time was 1988. The statue is of Esther Hobart Morris, who was instrumental in the 1869 passage of the bill to grant women equal rights in Wyoming, the first government in the world to do so.
Notice the children leaning over the balcony railing. Springtime is the time when school teachers have HAD IT, so they take their children on tours of state capitols. Every capitol I visited on this trip had busloads of school kids touring the building.
The 3,000 lb. buffalo (bison, actually) has a permanent home in the rotunda.
