Chester Alan Arthur Birthplace

Visiting Chester Alan Arthur's birthplace requires a drive along country roads and lanes in northern Vermont. The road is well marked, however, and during the fall especially is worth the effort.

Chet was elected vice president in the 1880 election; he became president after the death of James A. Garfield only six months after taking office. Chet was not known for being a particularly ethical person, but after becoming president he decided to be strictly honest and worthy of his high office. His main accomplishment was Civil Service reform. He was not in good health while president, and did not actively seek election in his own right. He died shortly after leaving the White House.
