Boston Common

Boston Common


Since 1634, Boston Common has graced downtown Boston. Nowadays it is a city park, with walkways, statuary, gardens, a frog pond, an extensive playground, and other amenities.

The frogs, located between the frog pond and the playground, reflect the spirit of the park.

Evening falls on Boston Common


The area retains its beauty in the waning light of an autumn evening. Park Street Church was built in 1809 as a Congregational church, organized in reaction to Unitarians who were gaining control in many of the old Puritan churches. This church of "firsts" is the location of the first Sunday school in 1818 and the first prison aid in 1824. On July 4, 1829, William Lloyd Garrison gave his first public anti-slavery speech here and two years later, "My Country 'Tis of Thee" was sung for the first time by the church children's choir. The church is now evangelical.
