Don's PhotoJaunt 2003 Grant's Tomb General Grant National Memorial

After General Grant died, Julia Grant requested that the tomb was to have no tourist facilities whatsoever -- no rest rooms, no benches, no fountains, no nothing -- except the tombs for the General and herself. She wanted people to visit there just to honor her husband.

The mural is of Confederate General Robert E. Lee shaking hands with General Grant at Lee's surrender.

The interior of the dome.

The crypts of General and former President Ulysses S. Grant and his wife Julia Dent Grant.

The property is lined on three sides with this tile mural, which tells the story of mankind from prehistory to nearly the present. Many of the people depicted are recognizable, including Grant and Lincoln in this section (at least that's who I think it is).
