Home of Mary, Mother of Washington

Home of Mary, Mother of Washington

Mary Washington, George's mother, lived in this house in Fredericksburg, Virginia, for many years, after the kids left home. George visited his mother occasionally, but never spent even one night at her home. He stayed with his sister, who lived nearby. George and his mother did not get along well.

It's a fairly large house; I'm sure there was room for George to spend the night, but he never did. The house is fairly typical of homes of the day. No photography allowed inside, so I don't have any photos, but the house is filled with artifacts of Mary's life.

Mary Washington's back porch

On the back porch and in the kitchen we could take pictures. Mary had a pretty nice back yard; I imagine she spent considerable time out here, telling her slaves what to do. The sundial is nice.

Inside the cookhouse

As in most homes of the time, the kitchen was a separate building. Quite a few artifacts are displayed here.
